MutualOne Foundation helps bring Natick’s history to life

Mark R. Haranas, president and CEO of MutualOne Bank and a MutualOne Charitable Foundation trustee, announced today that the Foundation has awarded $1,750 to support the Natick Historical Society’s Educational Outreach Project. The donation will be used to enhance and improve the organization’s materials in a variety of media, including a new exhibit, printed rack cards, a printed banner, and an updated website.

“We are happy to help the Historical Society expand its outreach,” said Haranas. “The town has a rich history that deserves to be shared with not only today’s residents, but future generations as well.”

MutualOne Charitable Foundation awards $5,000 to MetroWest ESL Fund

Robert P. Lamprey, chairman of the MutualOne Charitable Foundation, announced today that the Foundation has awarded a $5,000 grant to the MetroWest ESL Fund.

The Foundation’s donation will support the free Framingham Adult English as a Second Language PLUS program, which helps adults attain fluency in English and also provides GED and citizenship classes. The program has grown from 30 students to more than 700 students each semester since its founding in 1984.

“There is no question that this program is of great value to those in our community who want to strengthen their chances for a brighter future,” said Lamprey. “We are pleased to help MetroWest ESL provide rewarding outcomes for today’s students and to support its efforts to expand in order to accommodate the hundreds of people on its waiting list each semester.”

Ashland Education Foundation awarded $3,500 by Foundation to support Middle School technology initiative

AEFI Robert P. Lamprey, chairman of the MutualOne Charitable Foundation, announced today that the Foundation has awarded a $3,500 grant to the Ashland Education Foundation, Inc. (AEFI) to help meet state Technology Literacy Standards at the middle school level. AEFI is raising funds to purchase a total of 180 Chromebooks to support academic teams teaching in four major subject areas: ELA, math, science, and social studies.

“We are pleased to support Ashland’s efforts to enhance the education of its students by providing an integrated technology base in the curriculum at all school levels,” said Lamprey. “Today’s students will need solid technology knowledge and skills as they advance through the school system and beyond.”

MutualOne Foundation awards $1,000 to support 4th annual ‘Walk to Break the Silence’

Mark R. Haranas, president and CEO of MutualOne Bank and a MutualOne Charitable Foundation trustee, announced today that the Foundation has awarded a $1,000 grant in support of the 4th annual “Walk to Break the Silence” scheduled on the common in Downtown Framingham in October.

The walk-a-thon event, which will be sponsored in part by MutualOne Bank, will raise funds for Voices Against Violence, an organization providing free and confidential information, referrals, counseling, advocacy, support services and shelter to survivors/victims of sexual and domestic violence in the MetroWest area.

The pre-Walk rally will include special guests U.S. Representative Katherine Clark and Honorary Chair Gerry Leone, former Massachusetts attorney general. Walk participants will include community residents, former Voices Against Violence clients, students from Framingham State University and Framingham High School, members of the Framingham Police Department, and local and state officials.

MutualOne Foundation grants over $9,000 to SPARK Kindness

Robert P. Lamprey, chairman of the MutualOne Charitable Foundation, has announced a grant in the amount of $9,125 to SPARK Kindness, a Natick-based nonprofit devoted to creating and supporting a community culture that empowers youth and promotes kindness and respect.

With its award, MutualOne will be the premier corporate sponsor for the third season of the organization’s “Resilient Parent, Resilient Child” speaker series hosted at Natick High School and open to the entire MetroWest community.

The Foundation award will help build upon and strengthen the program by the addition of outstanding speakers and experts from beyond the local community. Planned topics include Internet safety/digital citizenship, mental wellness, inclusive education, bullying prevention, and substance abuse prevention.

“SPARK Kindness is helping to strengthen our community by directly addressing the concerns of local families and their children,” said Lamprey. “This type of programming is invaluable, and MutualOne is pleased to help make it even more impactful going forward.”

MutualOne Charitable Foundation awards $23,000 in scholarships

Mark R. Haranas, president and CEO of MutualOne Bank and a trustee of the MutualOne Charitable Foundation, announced today that the Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $23,000 to seven local students.

Four students received MutualOne Charitable Foundation scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each. They are Kelly Rivers, Joseph P. Keefe Regional Technical School; Glorimar Rivera, Marian High School; Terry Carson, Framingham High School; and John Whitney, Jr., Natick High School.

Each of the scholarships is named to honor a prominent past member of the MutualOne Bank family including Roland J. Bunnell II, a Foundation trustee and MutualOne Bank senior vice president and member of the board of directors; Joseph M. Vincent, senior vice president and controller, and Richard H. Potter, former president, CEO and chairman of the board of directors. The fourth scholarship is newly titled to recognize Charles W. Hickson, also a former president, CEO and board chairman.

After graduation from Framingham High School in 1942, Hickson enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1942 to 1945 during World War II as an engineer on submarines. Graduating from Boston College in 1951, Hickson taught at the Gordon Street School in Framingham before beginning his career at Framingham Cooperative Bank (now known as MutualOne Bank) in 1952, and retiring in 2006 after 54 years of service to the Bank and to the community of Framingham.

In addition to the $5,000 awards, Framingham High School seniors Yeni Tejade, Ian Gonzalez, and Penelope Esterez each received a $1,000 Edwin Alexis Marin Memorial scholarship. Established to encourage Latino students to continue on to college, the award honors the memory of a promising young student originally from El Salvador who lost his life in a car accident following his sophomore year at Framingham High School.

“We are firm believers in the value of higher education, and it pleases us to support the academic goals of the future leaders of our community,” said Haranas. “It is an investment we are proud to make.”
